GPS signal through tinted windows - Posted: January 31, 2022 - 8:45 PM Quote and reply
Does anyone have a solution to getting a GPS signal through tinted train windows? Here in Victoria, most trains now comprise Vlocity DMUs which have tinted windows so I have to revert to stopwatch timing. Grateful for any suggestions.
Cheers,
Malcolm

The only problem over here is well known, that with the class 22x Voyagers/Meridians. The only way is to stand for the entire trip in the vestibule whose windows are "normal" or sit in a seat whose window has been replaced with "normal" glass, but that takes an exceptional deal of luck!
In other words as far as I know no answer has been found, so far.

It is worth looking for a device that offers multiple satellite system reception such as GPS+ GLONASS, Galileo, Beizou etc.
Look for features such as high sensitivity and the option to plug in an external antenna that can boost reception.
Racelogic Performance box Touch uses GPS+Glonass and offers the best reception in Pendolinos and CAF stock in the UK. Class 22x voyagers have a severe metallic tint that reflects away sunlight and weak satellite signals as well as mobile phone signals. But there are a number of units that have replacement window panes that surprisingly allow reception.

Has anybody tried either of the new Garmins yet, the GPSMAP 65 or GPSMAP 66? Do they offer any improvement over the GPSMAP 64?

Thanks Ian. I was afraid of this. One day, perhaps, a techie may find an answer. I live in hope.

Malcolm

Thanks for the advice. Seems as though I need to research high-end devices. Surely, we can't be the only people with this problem.
Cheers,
Malcolm

I bought a Garmin GPSMap35s multi band device which can pick up GPS, GLONAS & Galileo satellites on the basis to have more satellites coverage and with the European Galileo system having stronger signals. My Samsung Galaxy smart phone also picks up the same satellites with using the DigiHUDD app. My limited experience since is that the new Garmin does pick up and get a “fix” on satellites quicker outside than my older Garmin (with GPS only) . My smartphone is almost instanatious if outside. On a moving 185 they both pick up the signals having not switched either on until the train was moving, although sometimes they can take a long time but still quicker than my older Garmin. I usually try to pick up and get a “fix” before boarding a train preferably with a clear view of the sky.
I recently had a trip on two Voyagers (220/221) from Leeds to Wakefield Westgate and had both devices switched on and with a satellite “fix” before boarding and with a reasonable window view (seated) I lost all signals on both devices on board. On the return on a Voyager I got a “fix” on my Garmin before boarding but did not switch on DigiHUD on my phone until after I boarded and the result was no satellites were pick up on either device. The problem is that the Voyagers have a metallic film applied on the outside to stop glare this prevents any signals being picked up inside. I understand that the newer Eurostar class 374’s are similar. I have no idea whether this problem affects the Meridians class 222. So I do not travel on Voyagers if I can possibly help, I don’t like the ambiance.
Hope this helps.

Not a regular user of Meridians, but could not get a signal on an RPS mass timing day some years ago.

Weird that I couldn't get GPS signal in TfW 769s, but no problem in Northern's.

Thankful that DfT made good mobile reception a key spec in the IET programme. Not sure about spec for HS2 stock?
