he Cornwall Capacity Enabling Scheme, which forms part of Network Rail’s Railway Upgrade Plan, will be delivered in two phases, with the first set to be completed by the end of 2018.
In total 21 additional signals will be installed to improve reliability, while six level crossings will be upgraded and fitted with Miniature Signal Lights (MSL), which allows the user to see a green or red light to indicate whether it is safe to cross.
These measures will improve safety at crossings which currently operate as ‘stop, look, listen’ and crossings which require permission from the signaller to use.
The work will also allow an additional train per hour in each direction between Plymouth and Penzance following the implementation of a new timetable in December 2018.

It's heartening to learn that capacity problems on the Cornish main line are being addressed. Members may recall that in 1986 British Rail removed the down line between Probus and Burngullow as a cost-cutting measure. All that was achieved was operating chaos. Several years later the down line was replaced at a cost of £14.3 million.

At St Erth the St Ives branch is only accessible from the Up Main. There is a trailing crossover immediately west of the station which allows trains coming off the branch to cross to the Down Main and proceed to Penzance. Until 1987 this crossover was controlled by a ground signal so passenger trains could not use it. Then the ground signal was replaced by a standard semaphore, allowing through services from St Erth to Penzance. 30 years later there are 28 trains from St Erth M - F. Only 2 run through to Penzance.
