Farnworth Tunnel has single bores in each direction, the northbound one having a 50 PSR. Rail Magazine advises that the wider Up Bolton tunnel is to be widened further to allow for double track. The work will be done during a 20 week closure from Easter 2015. Whilst this work is being done all traffic will be routed through the Down Bolton tunnel which will be signalled for bi-directional running. This requires modifications to the signalling and track to allow three trains per hour in each direction. Just to clarify this, is it the Farnworth to which this applies or are there two sets of tunnels, at Farnworth and Elsewhere, involved |

THERE ARE 2 TUNNELS AT FARNWORTH one for each line, The down (northbound) tunnel is the one with kinks in it and a 50 mph speed restriction. The up (southbound) is straight and has the line speed limit (75 mph). It is the latter which is to be enlarged. My understanding was that at Farnworth the intention was to lower the invert of the Down tunnel so that it too could be wired. I don't have a reference to hand, but I think it was Modern Railways 2 or 3 months ago. |

InterCityAPT said:', 70, ' ', 1) . '' FARNWORTH TUNNEL IMPROVEMENTS The reconstruction of Farnworth tunnel is an important stepping stone to an electrified railway. The existing tunnels are too small for the overhead lines, so we need to make one of them bigger. It's a complex engineering project: we need to fill in the big tunnel and then re-bore it using specialist, purpose built equipment before we can re-open the almost 300m tunnel. From 2016 better trains will be able to operate between Manchester and Preston providing more capacity on the line. Impact on services 2 May - 4 October During the work, we are committed to keeping as many passengers moving as possible. We're keeping one of the tunnels open so that services can run in both directions. This means trains will be less frequent, but we're working with train companies to lengthen platforms at stations along the route to allow trains with more carriages. It’s not just the tunnels; we also need to do lots of work in the area with bridges and we will be installing a new footbridge. Between 2 May and 4 October 2015, there will only be a single line in operation through the tunnel. Service frequency will be reduced between these dates. Timetables haven't been confirmed yet; we will update this page when we have more information. NR 29.01.15 |
